Talal. At the Monastery, Petra. One of the few remaining Bedouin who live in the caves in the mountains of Petra. Most of his family moved to the settlement of Umm Sayhoun, created by UNESCO when the site was given it’s designation in 1985. He remains in the hills, working as a guide, loving the land and living in traditional ways. At the time of my visit in September this year, Jordan was exceptionally quiet for visitors due to the situation in the Middle East; this is challenging for Talal and all the Bedouin who rely on the usual steady flow of people through Petra.
