Hippos congregate in small groups called pods, and generally a group will have one dominant bull that protects his mature females and young animals in the pods. What appeared to be a peaceful pod of hippos just wallowing around in the shallows of the Chobe River, changed rapidly, as the large dominant bull in the pod suddenly jumped onto another male in the pod, and proceeded to bite him on the head! The noise somewhere between a deep guttural roar, and scream, as the water erupted!
