Mystics in Motion

Mystic in Motion comprises five images taken during the Northern Mystics’ match against the Tactix in the 2025 season. Each photograph explores the intense dynamism of elite netball and seeks to render the game’s physicality and pace in a way that is both expressive and intentional. Using slow shutter speeds and a deliberate technique of pulling the camera through the movement of play, the images embrace blur not as an accident of action, but as a compositional tool. By matching the camera’s motion to the players’ trajectories, the frame dissolves into streaks of colour and energy, allowing a single moment of stillness to emerge from within the flow. This juxtaposition of blur and clarity conveys the visceral experience of watching the sport: the rapid exchanges, the sudden shifts of direction, and the brief instants of poise that define professional netball. The resulting photographs are not conventional sports images. Rather, they offer a more atmospheric reading of the match, capturing the rhythm and momentum of the game through movement itself.
